Minnehaha Park

Minnehaha Park

Today I am combining the April 26th “I Hiked For Park Day” along with FitDog Friday since we were hiking around at the park.  I Hiked For Park Day is sponsored by my friends Gizmo and Finn. Please keep in mind we went to Minnehaha Park on Saturday April 20 as there has been so much grey and snowy weather, it was the best day for sunshine. We had a balmy 40 degrees Fahrenheit but despite the heat wave there was snow all over and the waterfall was still half frozen.  Now if you know anything about water and freezing, moving water rarely freezes. Here in the deep freeze, aka Minnesota, the falls often freezes but still being partially frozen the end of April is rare! I am so overly pawproud to be living in such a frozen paradise! Mom took this photo of just the falls and put the arrow on the part to the right that is still frozen. As always, you can just click on a photo to see it in a larger size!

Hmmm...looks like a giant doggy drinking fountain!

Mom had to go on some showings in the area on Saturday, so we went along “to work” with her and afterwards we got to go to Minnehaha Park.  There were not too many people there (I wonder why on such a lovely day) but most of the people that were there had come with dogs. We were well behaved and did not have any bad interactions with other pups, I did not even howl at any! Normally I howl when I see a strange dog but there were simply too many too howl at and I was busy sniffin’ around and taking in the scenery!

Waterfall? Who cares, there is a squirrel up in this tree, mom!!!

Waterfall? Who cares, there is a squirrel up in this tree, mom!!!

Being short I could not see much because of the railings out of rock around the  falls, so I had to stand on my back paws to get a good look. There were lots of trees and lots of squirrels in the trees which I found much more interesting than the actual waterfall.

We walked over to the John H. Stevens house which was closed.  Katie and I took a short break on the front porch. This house is supposedly the place where the idea of creating the City of Minneapolis took place.  The house is now used as a museum. We also saw the old Minnehaha railroad depot but did not go there because of all the cars on the road that we would have had to cross.

We also walked along the creek for a bit, I was really tempted to jump in for a swim but mom would not let me.  She said that the current was very strong and I would end up going over the falls. It sounded like a fun adventure to me but if she says I could get hurt or killed I better listen.  It is such a pretty area too with the stone arch bridge.

Boy that water looks so nice...sure would like to jump in there!

There are sure a lot of picnic areas in the park too.  There are so many meeting points they had signs for the different areas for people to meet up at.  I am sure it would be even more fun with warmer weather!

That was our trip to Minnehaha Park and Falls!

Emma – looks like a great park, but oh so cold. Good thing you and Katie have such nice furry coats to keep you warm. You should get your mom to take you back there when it’s warm so you can wade in that nice water.

    • April 26, 2013 07:09

Spring has arrived as of yesterday, so swimming season is just around the corner, can’t wait!

Thanks…a good fur is a necessity in Minnesota unless you are a dog that likes to wear a coat but I prefer my own fur.

  8. April 26, 2013 08:08

What a gorgeous spot to take a hike Emma! Love the pictures of the frozen falls!

    • April 26, 2013 11:50

Maybe we will go back when the place thaws out and turns green.

  9. April 26, 2013 08:20

Oh Emma, we’ve been to your park and it is beautiful especially in the winter with the frozen waterfall. Moms sister lives in Bloomington–so we know MInneSNOWta!! Mom says we’re going to be making a trip to see her sissy soon, it would be fun to meet up.
By the way…we are not from Germany, but our Grandpa came from Germany when he was a young man. We’re going to add you to our list of blogs to follow.
    Guten Tag!!

With the name Schatzie, you just never know. We are in the south metro, let me know when you are here. We want mom to take us back when it is summertime and the water is all thawed out!

  16. April 26, 2013 13:27

Thank you for coming to Park Day Emma! Momz and I are both astounded…I’ve never seen any waterfalls and Momz sez she’s never seen a frozen one…That’s so kewl…It’s probably good those walls are there…You’d be one frozen pup if you fell in that icy water…Your park looks beautiful and the stone arch bridge is something we don’t see here…Thank you for sharing 🙂

    • April 26, 2013 14:06

Well, we don’t have the “tropical” stuff like you do so that is what makes sharing so much fun! I swim in ice water and it doesn’t bother me but mom tries to keep me from doing that. Thanks for hosting!

  17. April 26, 2013 14:44

That looks like an awesome park. I am a big fan of waterfalls. Years ago my hubby and I went to Mankato on our way back from South Dakota because I wanted to see a waterfall there. Unfortunately we got stuck in a blizzard so no waterfall for us!

Wow I can’t believe you still have snow, that’s crazy. I am so glad we have a little sun here at last. But I must say, it looks like you didn’t mind at all, you had fun in the park no matter what. I hope you told that squirrel off!

    • April 26, 2013 18:36

We love snow, no big deal for us but spring has arrived and the stuff has almost all melted away 🙂

Maybe you should go back to that park in the Summer when maybe you could have a picnic, Emma! The frozen waterfall was beautiful though, what a lovely park. I really enjoyed seeing it.

  20. April 26, 2013 15:17

What a wonderful park, Emma. I cannot believe the waterfall is still frozen. I am so glad you got to sniff out squirrels – they are evil and must be destroyed. BOL

Believe me, we have extra fur on our behinds here in MN…we are always out doing stuff, so no problems with the cold and snow for us.

  22. April 26, 2013 23:48

I still can’t get over how much snow you still have. Its so pretty!

  23. April 27, 2013 00:26

This looks like a beautiful park and the photos are great. I feel bad that our Seattle park day hike was actually too hot!

    • April 27, 2013 06:10

That will be our next problem, we do better with cold weather.

  24. April 27, 2013 08:38

Emma, your park is gorgeous! I can’t believe how nicely you and Katie sit in the snow. When Mom wants me to sit in snow, I only do it for 2 seconds. It’s TOO COLD on my bits and pieces. I hope you get to go back to the picnic area when the snow is gone.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

    • April 27, 2013 09:48

We are in the snow all the time for months, so it doesn’t bother us a bit…we both have nice fur coats too 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

  27. April 29, 2013 14:02

You and Katie look so pretty in your beautiful park. My human daddy is from Minnesota, so I’ll have to share your pictures with him. He’ll probably remember a lot of those spots . . . and how cold and long his winters used to be!

    • April 29, 2013 16:10

This winter was extremely long! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
