Living the Minnesota Life | GBGV

April 12, 2013

I am British born, so I will always be British but I only spent 9 weeks there. From England I spent some time in Germany, but for most of my life I have lived in Minnesota and I am truly living the Minnesota life.  Now, honestly, I was a bit worried about becoming Minnesotan as the whole country likes to make fun of us and our state but if you have been here long enough you just give up and accept that it is odd but fun here.

So much for spring!

So much for spring!

This year we are going for all kinds of winter records, with the most recent being a big snowstorm on April 11.  Sure April can be chilly and we might get a snow shower but this year is extreme.  Last week we finally saw our lawn for the first time in months and most of our snow was gone…this week we are buried under snow again and it is cold! What can a dog do?  They say if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, so that is where I am at.  The people here are nuts, doing things like wearing shorts even though it is 35 degrees and snowing, maybe it is some kind of protest, not sure but it is odd.  Did you know that we even grill out on the deck in the winter? Yep, my crazy mom does it 1-2 times a year! She digs that grill out and grills her dinner but she is not alone, it seems like everyone does that.

Now where did that grass go? I know it is down here somewhere!

Now where did that grass go? I know it is down here somewhere!

Yesterday we got dumped on again with snow, I guess with the totals from Wednesday and Thursday we have 6-8 inches of the real heavy wet snow. Yay, the forecast is for even more light snow today and later in the weekend…will winter ever end?  Mom got her camera out and we decided to show the world how spring activities look in our great state of Minnesota.

Who really needs to see the field to play a little spring baseball? Imagination is where it is at!

The slide still works, Katie could care less...hello, Katie, hello???

Mom, I unburied the grill. Get the ribs ready, I'm starving!

The camper looks ready, what swell weather for a camping trip! Let's get going!

So, there you have it! A little taste of the crazy life I lead here in Minnesota. Seriously, once you have lived here for a while it all seems so “normal”.  Maybe we are brain damaged from all the sub-zero weather we have in January and February.  One other scary fact is that we often have colder days than many places in Alaska…maybe we should move to Alaska to warm up? Hope all my readers are enjoying a lovely spring as much as we are at my house! This has been Emma’s Minnesota Spring Report…see you again on my next post.

Hi guys…glad to know someone else is grilling in the winter 🙂

  2. April 12, 2013 06:41

doesn’t seem crazy AT ALL to me. I’m in Michigan and we are much the same way…..that’s what happens when you live in the North or the Midwest! 🙂

  3. April 12, 2013 07:02

I probably said that before but… that’s a LOT of snow!

Yes, it sure is and it was gone…who asked for a refill???

  4. April 12, 2013 07:30

Oh Emma, this is such strange weather! We had an ice storm in Oklahoma a couple of days ago. Ice in April? Hopefully it will warm up soon for you and Katie!

    • April 12, 2013 09:09

No worries, we have some ice too…we have everything but warm spring weather 🙂

  5. April 12, 2013 08:38

That is just way too much snow and it makes my whisker shivers just looking at it! I hope you have a nice warm weekend!

  6. April 12, 2013 08:41

Well, we are cold, but not snow like that. Thankfully. Someday, really, it will be summer.

  7. April 12, 2013 09:21

Woof! Woof! It’s not like Chicago, maybe you guys will move here. Dad is going to be there next week and hope all the snow melts. Don’t you worry it will be Spring/Summer soon. We LOVE to grill too. Happy Friday/Weekend. Enjoy your Spring SNOW. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

    • April 12, 2013 09:27

Make sure you dad brings warm clothes! It is going to stay cold for the next week, like around 40 and there is a chance for more snow showers on a few days…just crazy but we know eventually it will be summer…we are skipping over spring at this point 😉

  8. April 12, 2013 10:59

The camper is funny. I could manage the cold, but I am sick of not seeing the sun. We have had days and days of dreary and dreary with a little rain. Meh! The grass is getting a small twinge of green at least.

    • April 12, 2013 11:16

It is dreary, snowy and cold…just a few too many things to handle at once in mid April! It just keeps snowing too, even though it is not heavy, it is crazy! Saw the grass last week and it was bit green but now it is all gone again!

  9. April 12, 2013 11:12

Oh, I’m so jealous right now. It’s scorching hot here. A couple of days ago, we were experiencing 36 to 38 degrees Celsius.

    • April 12, 2013 11:16

We have the same temps just in Fahrenheit! You can gladly have some of my snow at this point. 5 months of winter is getting long!

  10. April 12, 2013 11:41

That is some excuse for spring weather! Hope the sun finds you guys soon.

  11. April 12, 2013 13:07

Minnesota…Home of the “Mary Tyler Moore Show “and “Fargo”…and lutefisk…and “Jesse the Body” for Governor…not sure if it’s the weather that brings out the “crazy” or if the crazy was there all the time and the weather is just a bonus…But I’ve got a real soft spot for the home of Lake Woebegone…and I watched my brother BBQ a Thanksgiving turkey in the middle of a Chicago blizzard one year so you’re definitely not alone

    • April 12, 2013 14:15

Wow, impressive knowledge about MN…we are a cultural meca as well, but sometimes the craziness like 8″ of new snow mid April can be trying. We love it hear but it is not the place for everyone!

  12. April 12, 2013 15:40

My good friend Jay lives in Bemidji and he posted a picture on his Facebook wall of the opening day at Dairy Queen. They had to shovel a path to the order windows! That’s too much snow for me! Spring has been pretty stubborn about showing up here, too, though!

    • April 12, 2013 16:02

That is always a joke in MN because most Dairy Queens close for the winter here. It is dismal…snowflakes just keep coming down…nothing we can do but try to enjoy the snow since it is here.

  13. April 12, 2013 21:08

LOVE LOVE LOVE the pictures! Wow…I just would like ONE day of snow like that! Emma seems perfectly fine with it and ready to get her grill on! Doesn’t seem too terribly odd to me but then again the first and only time I had a gas oven and stove top I was thrilled that I could roast marshmallows indoors! 🙂 Emma’s ready to play ball too I see…she’s so darn cute!!

    • April 13, 2013 06:09

Thank you…one day or a few months is good but we should have about 60 degrees and we are stuck around the freezing points…5 months of snow is plenty!

I know exactly where you are comming from, as we are a bit north from you in Edmonton.Ab and getting a bunch more snow this weekend. Nasty, we better have a good summer. Have a great weekend!

    • April 13, 2013 06:10

You would understand for sure! We hope summer comes and maybe it will be a nice one, not so warm like last year was 🙂

  15. April 13, 2013 06:57

Well, Emma, you managed to make NH look good! We only have about an inch of a snow/ice combo on the ground here right now. We also grill on the deck in the Winter, and not just once or twice, probably at least once a week here! I love the photos, and I also love the fact that you always have a good attitude about everything. I trust you’ll let us know when you finally see the grass again?

    • April 13, 2013 09:37

Thanks, I am a pretty upbeat pup! I will let you know if the grass ever appears 🙂

  16. April 13, 2013 09:27

Jeesh! When will it end? That is funny that the people are wearing shorts. 🙂 We grill all winter too, but our winters are not nearly as bad as yours. Leah and Toby would love if it snowed year round. Meadow not so much. She’s a sun worshiper that one. 🙂

    • April 13, 2013 09:38

We love snow but this stuff is so wet and messy and we know it won’t be here for long, this time of year snow is pointless.

  17. April 13, 2013 09:48

I think we should move to Minnesota! i would love the snow and daddy would fit right in, he wears shorts in all weathers too:-)

    • April 13, 2013 09:52

We have lots of dog sledding in the northern part of our state…you would love it here!

  18. April 13, 2013 20:47

Emma wow you still have a lot of snow, now all our trees are now getting leaves and Sunday will be close to 70. Finally we are getting spring a month late. Hope you stop having the snow soon and see some signs if spring. Gotta cut grass now!

    • April 14, 2013 06:28

Today is ice rain and Wed Thurs chance of snow…no warm weather in sight yet but it has to come eventually!

  19. April 13, 2013 23:28

Wow, you get so much fun in Minnesota!!!!

    • April 14, 2013 06:29

But we would enjoy some warm fun more at this time of year 🙂

  20. April 14, 2013 10:28

This was sure a fun romp thru your yard! We don’t get much snow down here in Texas. At least not in the part of Texas that I live in. It sure looks fun! I’m hearing that we are entering an ice age. Global warming is over. Not enough sun spots. That’s what I hear. Thanks for sharing your snow!

    • April 14, 2013 12:22

Right now I would believe that! We weren’t sure about global warming anyway, we think there are just different climate cycles but not being climatologists, who knows. I wake up and look out my window to know what I am getting 🙂

  21. April 14, 2013 20:35

    I don’t know Emma…The Twins are okay…But i”m a Cubs fan!!! Happy Sunday!

    • April 15, 2013 06:11

The Twins are a lousy team, but they are my team…you Cubs can go ahead and win, just not the Sox 🙂

      • April 15, 2013 13:10

Common ground for us!!! I don’t like the Sox either! (Hey, good luck getting you taxes in on time! And if you need a character reference for your green card, let me know. I’ll vouch that you are quite a character! LOL)

      • April 15, 2013 14:24

        I guess that is a compliment 🙂

OM NOM NOM. You had me at ribs. We don’t grill anymore, since it offends the chickens.

  23. April 15, 2013 20:22

It’s great that you have such a pawsitive attitude toward the weather. I tend to be a big baby and want the cold to leave as soon as possible. Hope Spring arrives soon so you can enjoy ribs more often!

    • April 16, 2013 06:13

Since we can’t do anything about it, we may as well enjoy it but some nice warm, snow free weather would sure be nice! More snow coming tomorrow, so spring is at least another week away!

  24. April 16, 2013 15:55

Oh Emma, I feel so bad for you! I heard you got snow but didn’t realize it was so much. I just mentioned moving to Minnesota to Hubby the other day and he said, but it’s only warm there 3 months out of the year!

Here’s hoping you get some warmer weather soon.

    • April 17, 2013 06:25

We have 2 seasons, winter and road construction…actually we love it here, this is just a bit extreme this year! More snow is on the way too!
