Ding Dong Doorbell | GBGV

March 29, 2013
Oh, my package arrived!

Oh, my package arrived!

Finally I have found a way to make my wishes known. Mom works and works in her office and sometimes forgets that we are outside and want to come in. I know, most dogs would bark and carry on but we just stand there in front of the door for what can seem like days waiting for her to come and see if we are ready to come in.  Well, wait no more, we now have our very own doorbell! Yes, thanks to a post I read on a friend’s blog, Kritters that Twitter, I ordered up this dog doorbell from Pebble Smart and had mom install it for us. For starters it is just

attached with strong double faced tape but we have the option to screw it in any time if we want to really make it permanent.

It seems pretty straight forward and simple. I got the package in the mail, and naturally, my cat bro Bert had to get his nose in it as well.  He is an indoor cat, so he has no need for a doorbell but cats are so darn curious.

Once mom got it hung up outside we decided to give it a whirl. Ok, we is wrong, rather I decided to give it a whirl. My sister Katie is a Kuvasz, a

guard dog, but for some reason she was terrified of the doorbell. She went running to the other side of the yard and refused to come near the house. I tell you, a dog like me has to do everything around this place!

The coolest thing is that right above the spot that makes the bell ring there is a place to put a treat, so mom put one in there and I was ringing the bell like crazy trying to get at the treat!  The trigger is really sensitive so I don’t have to push too much with my nose and it

rings.  The other cool feature is that there is an insert where the treat is, so mom can just lift that out and she has the treat in her hands again.

This is not something that most of us dogs will learn in one or two sittings, but I am catching on and after 2 days I am starting to understand the process with this doorbell. The learning time also depends on how often and how much you train, I am just training off and on while mom is working so it may take a while longer.

Once I have the system down, not only will I be able to let mom know that we want to come in, but  I will be able to ring her when I just need to check on her and have a snuggle.  I am a snuggle bunny and I often like to be outside but have the need to check on mom and snuggle with her for a minute, then I go back to playing.  I guess I am “kind of” attached to her. Yesterday she was so excited as she left us outside and she knew we wanted to come in and all of the sudden I rang the bell and she came running! I got a treat and so much loving! I might catch on quicker with that reception!

I would highly recommend this doorbell to anyone that has a dog that needs a way to signal the need to go in or out.  They have several different options on their site that you can check out. Mom has been looking for a dog doorbell for about a year now and they just don’t seem to exist so we jumped right on this one and so far we are super happy! Stop by the Pebble Smart website and take a look!

You clever thing, learning so fast. Litchi could probably do with one of those. She scratches at the door once and then will stand and stare at it for hours until it opens 🙂

I did it again this morning…it is wonderful to see mom running for the door and then getting so much praise!

    Happy Friday Emma,

Your door bell looks great! What a brilliant idea; we looked for one of these at Crufts this year for Kitty. As you know shes only wee pup and in training (when SHE fancies it!) and we came up with bells on a ribbon for her to ring when she wants to go out 🙂 I’ve attached a photo for you. There’s also a pic of her pre-first grooming (we had to do something about the fur over the eyes :-/ )

Happy bell ringing Emma Have a fab Easter (I’m trying your carrot biscuits out for Kitty on Sunday)

    Lots of hugs Helen x

Hi! We only go out to play and mom does not want us telling her that we want to go out so we have the bell just to come back in but it works great. Keep Kitty’s eye hair trimmed nicely. Lots of people leave it long but it is not good for the eyes having the hair falling in the eyes all the time. Mom trims mine at home with a thinning shears, I don’t mind at all. Hope she loves the Easter cookies, they are yummy! Happy Easter and hugs to you and Kitty 🙂

that looks really cool but thank goodness I am super good at making my wishes known! Barks and licks and love, Dakota

    • March 29, 2013 08:50

Most dogs are but for some reason we learned not to bark to come in.

  5. March 29, 2013 07:17

Momz hung a cowbell from the doorknob and i nudge it when I need to go out and do my business…Took me a while to figure it out, but I’ve got it down now and sometimes I just make it ring when I want to go out and play 😉 Did your mom put one on the outside too Emma or just one on the inside?

    • March 29, 2013 08:51

Only on the outside for when we want to come in. We have the yard is not a bathroom policy, so we only go out to play and do business on our walks. I am sure mom may regret the bell if I use it too much but right now we are really excited about it.

We are not normal dogs because we never bark to come in or go out but that’s ok, this doorbell is great! I rang it again to come in this morning…love to see mom running and then giving me all that praise!

  7. March 29, 2013 07:49

That is the coolest thing ever! Mama is gonna check it out cos she hates when I scratch to come in cos it messes up the door paint. Your mama is sooo clever!

    • March 29, 2013 08:53

Sometimes my friends scratch and mom gets really mad! We just sit there, but now I am starting to ring. It is a great thing and the service/delivery was super fast too!

That’s a great idea. That would have saved the door in our house. Torrey just scratches to get it. I also just stare at the door. Emma, you’re so smart, you will figure it out in no time.

    • March 29, 2013 08:54

I did it again on my own this morning, mom is ecstatic! That scratching makes mom really mad, some of my friends do that. Glad you are more civilized like Katie and I 😉

  9. March 29, 2013 08:45

That is such a cool idea and you will get her attention fur sure now!

  10. March 29, 2013 09:17

That is a great idea! We have a doggy door that goes into the sunroom and then we just stand at the back door and bark when we want in! We are such big dogs that our bark is really loud and the humans can’t help but hear us and let us in! We are so glad you got a doorbell Emma!

    • March 29, 2013 10:32

We are loud to but we don’t bark to come in, so now we have the doorbell!

  11. March 29, 2013 10:10

Emma, you got your own doorbell? I am so jealous. What a nifty idea. I bet you will have the entire process down in no time…you are sooo smart!
    Have a wonderful weekend.

    • March 29, 2013 10:32

I have done it now 3 times on my own and it makes mom so happy I hate to stop ringing it 😉

  12. March 29, 2013 10:14

What a cool thing, Emma! Thanks for sharing!

This is SUCH a cool idea! Unfortunately, I wouldn’t get up to answer the door, so my dogs wouldn’t learn to use it properly.

  14. March 29, 2013 12:07

We must be on the same wavelength today – I just posted a video of how Eko likes to tell me it’s time to go out. Packages are the best, you get something cool in them AND you can shred the box. That doorbell is great for coming in, but I have a feeling Eko would quickly learn to abuse it when he wants to go out (all the time!).

    • March 29, 2013 13:14

It is just for one way, you have to buy a second ringer button if you want in and out, so this is great!

  15. March 29, 2013 14:20

What do you use to treat your mom and how long do you think it will take her to be trained? 😉 Have a great Easter Emma!

    • March 29, 2013 16:20

I give her kisses and she is already running really fast when I ring so I think she will get it pretty quickly 😉

  16. March 29, 2013 15:12

Such a smartie you are Emma, catching on so quick. 🙂

    • March 29, 2013 16:20

Mom is amazed, but right now it is either I just do it or I play dumb and can’t remember but overall I am doing pretty well with it.

  17. March 29, 2013 16:55

Well that looks like an excellent item to have at the house!

    • March 29, 2013 17:44

We think it will be a great solution to mom forgetting us outside!

  18. March 29, 2013 17:16

That sounds like a great gadget. Soon you will be able to summon your people at will!

Wow what a smarty and quick learner you are Emma! Impressive!!

  20. March 29, 2013 23:08

Sounds like you need to get Katie use to it too, but sounds like a great way to get Mom’s attention. The doorbell here means an annoying salesman so Mom doesn’t answer the door. We have a dog door through the garage, Mom opens the garage door 1/3 of the way during day so we can go in and out at will. At night we can go out in the garage to sleep or come in with the door shut.

    • March 30, 2013 06:18

Mom always wants to know where we are so a doggy door would not work and the cats might get out, so this doorbell is perfect.

  21. March 30, 2013 22:58

My dogs don’t stay out very long, so I don’t need something like this, but I do think it is a very nifty little tool! The addition of a treat slot is brilliant!

    • March 31, 2013 06:28

Mine don’t always stay out long either but it just makes it easier so I don’t have to check on them.

  22. March 31, 2013 07:14

This is awesome, Emma! We could use that here for sure. Two of the dogs will scratch at the door if they want to come in, but the other two will just sit there. And I get busy sometimes like your Mom does and they can sit there for a bit wanting to come in. We also have indoor cats so can’t have a dog door. You are so smart to be figuring it out already, and I hope my dogs could catch on as quickly. I am definitely going to check this out!

  23. March 31, 2013 09:24

I think I need one of those!

  24. March 31, 2013 20:18

I could see my dogs enjoying having a doorbell, in that they would enjoy having me walk back and forth to the door to let them in and out all day. :>) They would have too much fun with it. I’m sure you wouldn’t be as devious!

    • April 1, 2013 06:07

I think we will use it responsibly but if not mom can always turn it off.
