Do you brush your teeth | GBGV

Me getting ready for bed

Dog dental health is a serious subject.  I know so many of my friends do not get their teeth brushed and I feel bad for them.  How would your human feel if they did not brush their teeth?  Ok, many say it is too much work or my dog does not want to and fights it but these are all just poor excuses.

Katie and I have our nightly routine with mom.  We started pretty much when we were 9 weeks old and first came to live with mom.  Mom also brushed Trine’s teeth, but since Trine was about 16 months old she got started on that later in life and it was never a problem.

At bed time the first thing we do is to “get naked”.  Mom takes our collars off and gives us a neck massage – this is to die for I tell ya!

I sleep upstairs by mom so I head on up and get my “ear pony” as we call it put in and slip into my jammies.  Mom uses one of her scrunchies to put up my ears so they get some fresh air.  My long

floppys hang down all day and tend to get infections if they are not cleaned and aired out.  I don’t mind at all as it is not painful and mom says I look cute with them up.

Next mom brushes our teeth.  We use a special toothpaste for dogs from Drs. Foster and Smith – it prevents tartar and tastes great.  When we were puppies and just learning to brush mom used a finger brush to get us used to the feel and taste.  After a few weeks we graduated to a real toothbrush.  Mom has a system for the toothbrush, she has hers and when she gets

a new one we take her old one which is fine for us.  Katie and I both love it and actually line up when mom says time for teeth brushing.  Mom’s dog Trine also loved having her teeth brushed and would sit in the bathroom and wait for her turn.  Brushing our teeth takes only maybe 5 minutes of time in the evening so it is not really a big deal for mom.  Katie will be 10 next month and has never had to have her teeth cleaned and I am five and have great teeth according to our vet.  We also have healthy chews and dog food but the brushing does make a difference.

It is much better for us if we never have to have to be put under to have our teeth cleaned and it is less expensive for mom too – more money to buy us snacks and toys and stuff!

Lesson is – make sure your parents brush your teeth once a day!  You will not mind it and will actually like it once you get used to it and if you do it at the same time daily it will be part of your routine.

Yep, we brush our dogs teeth too and they love it. We started all of our pups with teeth brushing the same way as you with a finger brush and then moved on to the big boy brush. Just make sure you use a doggy toothpaste and not a human one.

    Happy Monday!

    Hi Guys,

You are too cute in the bathroom in your PJ’s!! 🙂

I’m gonna ask Mum about this, it sounds yummy!! She keeps meaning to start this with me, but isn’t sure what to use, I say, just get started and then you can refine!!

    Thanks for the prod,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

    Hi Emma!!
What a fantastic blog post my friend. I am very proud of you and your Mommy. You really know your stuff on the matter, too! I have been getting my teeth brushed since I was a puppy too, but my mouth is pretty small, so we have to use a little one and sometimes still a finger brush. Mommy says you have re-convicted her on it too, because we had slacked off of doing it for a while. Blame the surgery!
Hugs to you and your dear Mommy. ~ Pixel

Heehee, I can’t believe Mommy logged me out of my twitter account and so I accidentally used HER user for my comment, not my Pixel Blue Eyes account. Sorry Emma!

I think you have to start when they are puppies. Our dog is 7 and I tried, but couldn’t even get her to open her mouth. She does not like anyone messing with her teeth, even the groomer couldn’t do it!

Gwennie just had her teeth cleaned at the vet, as we have done every year. I also purchased a brush and paste. You have inspired me! Emma, we love your blog! Debora (Gwennie’s Mom)
