Getting ready to bake

We’ve had some bad weather recently which makes it an ideal time to get into the kitchen and do some baking.  Now some humans out there think that dogs can’t or shouldn’t bake – nonsense!  We are great bakers, just give us the chance, and best of all we love to clean up the mess we make in the kitchen!

Today I am going to be making Bacon Bone Cookies, yummy, just love anything having to do with bacon!  The first step in good baking is getting yourself ready.  Make sure you clean

Always read your recipe before getting started

your paws.  You don’t want mud or grass flavor mixing in with the taste of your cookies.  Then you need an apron to keep the mess off your belly and a hat.  Well, I guess a hat is not necessary but it makes you look good!  Once you are ready you need to get out your recipe, ingredients and supplies.

Always start baking by reading your recipe.  I have my favorite cookbook out on the counter because it stands up and is easier to read that way.  In the back there were blank pages to add

Cut out the cookies carefully

more recipes so I added this one to my book.

This Bacon Bone Cookie recipe has been passed down over the dog generations in my family, a well loved recipe for sure.  Remember you might get some of your cookie ingredients or dough on your recipe but VERY IMPORTANT, do not eat the recipe because it tastes good!  If you eat it then it is gone and you can’t make the cookies anymore which would be sad!  One other important tip – if you are one of those big dogs that drools a lot, you may want to cover your mouth so you don’t get too much liquid in your dough.

Once you have everything mixed up just right you need to stamp the dough out with your paws or roll it out to about 1/2 thick.  A 1/2 inch is slightly less than the height of a normal paw.  This is the hardest part because you will need to fight your natural instincts to just eat up all the dough and be done.  Mom says

Check your oven timer

eating raw dough is not good for you, so resist temptation and wait until your cookies are baked.  Using your front paws, press

the bone shaped cookie cutter into the dough and cut out your bones.  Place them ever so gently with your mouth on the cookie sheet and repeat until the dough has all been used up.

Next you need to bake the cookies in the oven.  Be very careful and maybe have your mom help you out here – you don’t want to  burn your paws on a hot oven.  Set the timer and when they are done, let them cool off.

Now for the best part – eat them!  Another tip – they always seem to taste better when you share them with family members or friends and they will love you for it too!

Bon Appetite!
